How it works
People search resize image to 100KB when a visa portal, university application, or government form rejects a 4MB phone photo. A generic “compress image” slider leaves you guessing. This page aims at a hard byte cap.
- Drop a photo — JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF. Nothing is uploaded. Processing stays in this tab.
- Pick the cap — 100KB is the default (the query most people type). 50KB, 200KB, 500KB, and a custom KB field cover other portals.
- Quality first — we binary-search JPEG quality at the current pixel size and keep the largest file that still fits under the cap. That avoids turning a 3MB selfie into a 12KB smear when 100KB still had room.
- Pixels only if needed — if even a low-quality JPEG is over the cap, we shrink the long edge and try again, down to 64px.
- Download — a JPEG named with the target (
photo-100kb.jpg). EXIF from the camera is dropped by the re-encode.
This is not a marketplace 1MB preset and not a “lossless pixel resize.” Those jobs live on other pages. The job here is resize image to 100KB (or the KB you typed) so a form that says “photograph must be 100KB or less” stops bouncing you.
If the original is already under the cap, you still get a JPEG so the upload field gets a predictable type. Close the tab and the files are gone.
FAQ
Why 100KB and not just “compress”?
Because the search is resize image to 100KB. Visa photos, some DSC/SSC forms, and older job portals still print that number. A slider that lands on 137KB fails the same way a 4MB file does.
Will the photo stay sharp?
We keep the highest JPEG quality that fits. Only when quality alone cannot hit the cap do we reduce width and height. A 12MP phone shot usually needs both; a 400KB screenshot often needs quality only.
Can I target 50KB or 200KB?
Yes. 50KB is common on some ID uploads. 200KB and 500KB are looser email and LMS caps. Custom accepts 10–5000KB. The last preset is stored in this browser.
Is this the same as TinyPNG?
TinyPNG picks a visual quality and hopes the size is “small enough.” Here the byte budget is the product. If we cannot fit the cap, the result is marked as still over — we do not pretend a 100KB form will accept 140KB.
Do you keep my photo?
No. Decode, encode, and download run locally. There is no account and no server upload.
